ORGANIZATIONAL: Project Coordinators Update - Vibhavaree

  • Vibhavaree is trying to get 2006 project estimates. Stewards should update website. She will be sending checks for April soon.

 

PROJECT: Ravi Aluganti Scholarship - Vibhavaree

  • Fellowship amount will be up by 250$. Use to revise pay scale for animators as suggested by Asha Seattle members.
  • This has already been approved.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL: Asha West Coast Conference - Srijan

  • Srijan checked if anybody would be interested in attending West Coast conference to be held in Silicon Valley.
  • They are also looking for a chapter to host Asha wide Conference.
  • Asha Elections 2006-2008 are coming up. Looking for nominations by 25th March for Asha wide posts. To be discussed in March 23rd meeting. We should try to participate more actively.
  • General consensus among Asha Chapters is that our chapter does not participate in Asha wide events.

 

PROJECT: Project Why - Ravi

  • This is a donor specific project in Delhi on a recurring basis. Project supports after school education for drop-outs. Caters to 500 kids and has about 35 employees. They have 4 primary schools, 1 day care and 3 early education centers. Most of the students are children of migrants from neighboring states.
  • They also help kids with health issues. Currently they have only about 60-70% of the funding required to sustain them.
  • Questions for Ravi to follow-up:
    1. Reasons why student-teacher ratio is small - 10:1?
    2. Breakup of students and teachers center-wise.
    3. What do they mean by teachers are from local community?
    4. What training do the teachers have?
    5. Why was UNESCO funding dropped? Was this one-time only or recurring? 
  • Decision was to vote after site visit is completed.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL: Donor Specific Projects

  • During  a workshop the following choices were discussed:
    • Choice1 - Consider these as regular projects
    • Choice2 - Consider a light project steward scheme
    • Choice3 - Don't consider donor specific projects
  • The workshop decision was choice1. That is to treat all donor specific projects as regular projects, with a steward, site visit, etc. The decision made at the workshop was put to vote:
    • Yes to choice 1 : 13
    • No to choice 1 : 1
    • Refrain : 3

 

PROJECT: Support Bhopali's March - Vani

 

  • Vani presented the slide deck which was discussed in-depth at the workshop. A group of survivors were marching 800 km from Bhopal to Delhi to meet with the Prime Minister and present a set of demand such as cleanup of the site, clean driniking water, etc. A vote was put to decide whether Asha Seattle as a chapter would support the March and sign the petition. Voting decision is as follows:
    • Yes: 12
    • No: 2
