Topic: Discussion on the proposal from ISC (India Sponsorship Committee)

Presenter: Deb, Smitha

Key points from proposal part-1:

- As far as this project is concerned, ISC is based in Yeravada area of Pune. It conducts support classes 3 hours a day and 6 days a week for the kids in that area coming from very low income families.

- All classes are in Marathi. Spoken English classes have recently been started for students from 8th to 10th standard.

- Emphasis is on Reading and Mathematics

- Identify slow learners through separate tests and give special attention

- Library program to enhance reading skills

- Computer program is available from 4th till 8th standard as a part of the outreach activity of L&T Infotech with the help of volunteers from the company

- The proposal request is to fund 9 centers with 9 teachers and 334 students

- Past record: Of the 60 students, 50 will complete middle school, 15 will complete 10th std, 7 to 8 will go to college and 7 to 8 will get a job

- Classes are multi grade from 1 to 4th std and then from 5th to 7th std. 3 classes are held at the ISC center and 6 classes are held at the community. All classes are within a walkable distance.

- Karuna trust which dropped funding has been contacted and a positive response was obtained from them regarding ISC.

There were few questions raised including:

- Are there any kids who do not go to any government school? Deb is not sure.

- How is ISC planning to split the 9 teachers among the support classes? Answer: 1 teacher looks after 40 kids. Plan is to decrease the number to 20 kids per teacher.

- The past record of ISC and its statistics that are presented are not very clear. Plan is to contact them again regarding the numbers.

- Budget proposal is presented. It has some items that are not matching with the budget proposal from previous site visit. Smitha and Deb will get back on this.

- Mukul Karnik volunteered to do a site visit in July.

Key points from proposal part-2:

- This proposal is regarding the gender advocacy in Yeravada slums.

- Supporting approximately 180 students in 15 groups

- Children meet regularly and discuss interests of girls

- Supports women rights and issues. Has argued against child marriage

- Plan is to include a module on gender education in 4 municipal schools for boys and girls of 5th to 6th std for 1 class hour a week (if allowed) so as to sensitize the kids at an early age and also to break some stereotypes

- Asking for salary, travel allowance, materials, posters, banners, annual mela, workshops, sabhas, food, sound system

- Budget is presented. Split up is not very clear. Rs. 60000 per workshop sounded very expensive.

- Asha Pune suggested to fund this proposal.

Questions raised:

- Who are the audience for the workshops? Answer: Just the girls. Parents were suggested to take part in them.

- What do they do in workshops? A detailed answer for this is requested.

Chapter coordinator updates:

- Asha west side conference: Request for volunteers for coordination. It is going to be on Aug 30 and Sep 1. Pooja will be there to help. It is a good chance to know what other chapters are doing.

- Allgorhythms kickstart: Request for volunteers. Tulika is one of the coordinators. We need more coordinators and volunteers.

Topic: Vigyan Ashram

Presenter : Mukul Karnik

Key points from the presentation:

- Vigyan Ashram is submitted for WAH 08 program

- Vocational training program. It is located approximately 100kms outside of Pune.

- Students stay here and get a diploma in rural technology, agriculture and related things

- Funding cycle is ending in July. Last year budget was $15000. This year it increased to 16500$ (recurring) and 1800$ (one time funding)

- This money is supposed to be coming from WAH. But we do not have to wait till WAH generates money. Asha Seattle can send the money when required and WAH will compensate for the money later.

- $16500 will be approved by default as it is recurring project. The one-time funding request needs to be voted on.
