Minutes of Asha Seattle meeting on 07/22/07

Update on Tomorrow's foundation – Presented by  Swati

§         Voting that took place last meeting which approved funding for Tomorrow's foundation is void since the funding numbers were wrong. The request is for $6000 instead of $600. A corrected proposal will be presented in upcoming meetings

§         A question was raised when TF proposal was presented – why REACH, parent organization of TF, pulled the plug on this program. After further research it was found that TF was subscribed to an organization named CLPOA and REACH was directly involved with CLPOA. REACH severed the funds to CLPOA which indirectly affects TF

 

NCERT Text books Reviews - Presented by Swati

§         Acknowledged notable work done by Arul for arranging this activity, also Anusha for gathering help from local teachers.

§         Made a group of volunteers who are interested in the activity.

§         Meeting on July 26 th , Thursday. Microsoft Bldg 50, 7 pm.

§         Send an email to Swati if you are interested to join the group.

Goals of this activity:

i.                    Familiarize with NCERT new syllabus framework.

ii.                   Provide access to these books at least to the school teachers in India.

iii.                 Question to follow up on: Which educational boards have accepted NCERT proposed curriculum; Has national board completely integrated this framework into CBSE syllabus?

Suggestion:  Place milestones and goals for this activity

 

 Sakshar Project – Presented by Srijan

§         Not an Asha-Seattle Project, but will be funded by Seattle chapter from individual donor's request.

§         Reviewed, monitored, and accepted by Seattle-Delhi Chapter.

§         Site visit was OK – no negative flags were raised.

§         Tulika is a contact person for this project from Seattle chapter.

Vote:  Funding $8,000 for a year to Sakshar Project –

YES – 8,   NO – 0,  Abstains – 0.

 

Chapter Update -  Presented by Srijan

STP:

§         15 participants

§         Raised around 12,000

§         Fund raising is still in progress, donations can be still made

Chapter Picnic:

§         Voting needs to be organized on if the picnic should be open for non-asha members.

§         Call out for volunteers to arrange the picnic.

§         Proposed time : Mid or End of August.

Algorhythms:

Dates are yet to be finalized however, candidate dates are 21-22 OCT.

 

Asha wide update  - Presented by Srijan

Anti-harassment  Policy discussion

§         Heads up new Anti-harrassment policy will be coming out for voting in Seattle chapter.

§         Background on why the harassment policy is needed – To formalize the process and plan of action for asha in case of harassment.

Asha Fellows:

Asha fellows are Asha members performing noteworthy work in India whose livelihood is paid by the organization

Update on Saurabh Sharma:

§         Working on spreading awareness regarding Right to Information in college students.

§         Based in Delhi

Update on N. Mutyalappa :

§         Sarpanch in Andra Pradesh.

§         Implementing NREGA scheme – at least 100 days of guaranteed employment or equivalent compensation.

Asha Corps:

People In India paid to perform certain admin work critical to Asha.

Heads up, proposal will be coming for voting.
