Minutes of Asha Seattle meeting on 07/11/07 Venue : RTC LWSD No 414, Morton Johnson Room, Redmond, WA Attendees: Palani, Mani, Shubha, Swati, Rohit, Ameya, Srijan, Shailesh, Ravi, Ken, Subhashish, Sree, Megha, Harish, Vijay K Update on Vigyan Ashram – Presented by Ameya § Vigyan Ashram runs vocational training program as well as a 3 year curriculum for 8th-10th grade students from rural areas belonging to lower to lower middle class. § There was a request for renewal of funding. § An audit report was requested. § A survey measuring the effectiveness of the programs was discussed, where 55 out of the 87 Vigyan Ashram alumni were found to use their skills learnt at Vigyan Ashram in their professional lives. 37 had turned into successful entrepreneurs. Vote: Funding a recurring amount of ~$15,000 (Rs 600,000) pending site visit report. Yes – 11, No – 0, Abstain – 4 Update on Senchiagram School, Bharati Trust - Presented by Palani § A background of Bharathi trust's activities working with the Irula tribes was provided. § Senchiagram school has 35 children. Vote: Funding request for continuation of recurring school expenses, a new one-time expense ~$1250 for a motorcycle and a new recurring expense ~$1200 for employing an administrative clerk to work on various development projects within the villages Yes – 13, No – 0, Abstain – 2 Update on V-Excel – Presented by Palani § The project works with developmentally challenged children. § Site visit report was presented (http://www.ashanet.org/projects-new/documents/845/.doc) § They have 3 different activities/services: Kaleidoscope learning center, Bridges Learning academy and V-excel remedial center. Update on Miles for Smiles – Presented by Megha § Megha provided background of how the program was carried out previous years, which has caused runners to be non-committal to Asha's fund-raising mission and has resulted in Asha miles for smiles volunteers to spend their time and energy towards not-so-effective results. Vote: 2 changes to the miles for smiles were proposed to this year's miles for smiles model. 1. No subsidized training costs 2. A minimum fund-raising limit ($655 for half and $1310 for full marathon) to be placed for runners on which runners will commit. Yes – 15, No – 0, Abstain – 0 Update on Tomorrow's foundation – Presented by Swati § Tomorrow's foundation works with deprived children from streets, slums and red-light areas in Calcutta. § The funding request was for a community led educational centers catering to 5-9 year children who haven't been to school before or are dropouts. § The focus is to bring the students in pace and direct them to attend mainstream schools. § REACH India was funding this project and their funding expired in July 2007, and the project needed funds from August 2007. Vote: Funding for 6-8 such centers for ~$18K-$25K pending site visit and clarifications from REACH on why the funding was not renewed by them Yes – 14, No – 0, Abstain – 1
