Uthanau: Presened by Subhashish, Binay & Swati

They presented the budget for the new crèche in Uthnau. The answers to the questions raised in the last meeting were presented.

Questions and Answers

1.      Why is ratio of kids:teachers (50:4) so high?

Kids stay 10 hours/day and 6 days a week so the teachers have to work there all day. They also help out with cooking.

2.      What kind of festivals do we fund (3 festivals/year) Why do we fund them ?

Most people work in stone quarries and their most prevalent recreation is drinking. These occasions facilitate social interactions between people and at least give some alternative. they also help build the community.

3. What happens at the coaching center ?

More of a help to kids going to other schools. the center is free of charge.

4. Why was the cost of the food Rs.16 /day / person ? when the govt rates are about Rs.2/person/meal (rice not included) (includes the cost of the cook's pay) ?

They called Kunal and he explained the expenditure. They serve meat or fish once a week and eggs twice a week in addition to daal and vegetables. Aloo (Potatoes) is very costly there. Kunal will send the breakup. No one raised any concerns on the groups integrity and agreed to move ahead with this budget.

After the Uthnau creche funding vote we had an action item to report back on Kunal's break down for the Rs 16/kid/day expense.

Vote for the creche : Keep it funded until the whole of Uthanau comes up for review.

Site visit on Kalam: Presented by Srijan

§         Srijan did not find any activities going on when he reached, but met 4 of the youth staff, who had gone through Kalam's workshop previously and are now working to further Kalam's cause.

§         They did not know that he is from Asha and is on an evaluative visit.

§         Poetry workshop was suspended during board exam (so that is understandable).

§         They have poetry sessions which are open to all. So students and marginalized sections participate together. The group size is usually 10-20.

§         Footpath poetry: many chai stalls have these boards with poetry written by the marginalized people for everyone to read.

§         Khula Baksho: We all saw the poetry book make completely by the youth staff. It was quite impressive.

§         They also conduct a poetry contest of sorts, asking other people to submit poems and assorting these into a collection.

§         Everything is done entirely by the youth. All the children are from marginalized backgrounds.

§         One idea that came up was to sell   their books to other projects if they can benefit from this.

§         Srijans report is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/asha-seattle/message/7844 and will be uploaded to Kalam's website.

Notes:

Can we help them register themselves as an NGO and share the process of obtaining FCRA clearance ?

Next site visit: Visit a live session

General Learning for site-visits: Talk to the administrators of partner organizations.

Idea: Making greeting cards, posters, etc and possibilities of consumption here
