Minutes of Asha Seattle meeting on 03/07/07

Project - National Association for Blind – Presented by Megha

 

  • NAB was established '77.
  • The proposal for hearing and speech impaired caters to about 12 child and adults.
  • Provide home and community based services (2 hrs twice a week per child).
  • Currently funded by Sense International - funding runs out in April 2007.
  • Jayashree has visited their offices (Dec 2006) and worked with them.
  • Megha will do the site visit in June.

    Questions:

 

  • Trained teacher(s) available to help with the unique skills?
  • Clarify if the project co-ordinator gets honorarium from other sources.
  • Transportation costs 600 x 4 x 12 need to be clarified.
  • Ask for last years accounts statements.

Project - Bhoomiheen – Presented by Gagan

 

  • Very poor communities in Aau (70% below poverty line).
  • Largest Asha project worldwide - first one on WAH.
  • $11,500 from general funds + $22,500 targetted funds for the last few years.
  • Number of children increased 240 (1998) to about 270 children today. There is almost 2200 hours of education in a village with no education before.
  • Open education curriculum.
  • Few kids dropped out after 8th grade, many went on for further studies
  • 5 years back, it was hard to bring kids to school. Today, that's not a problem.
  • Net assets today worth $23 lakhs; reflected in asset report.
  • $5000 worth of investment in renewable energy today.
  • Followup question - can we get govt subsidies for infrastructure investment? Govt gives subsidies if there's no electricity in the area.
  • Total funding ask for 2007 = $44000; $10,500 more than current commitment; divided between increased running expenses, facility enhancement, fuel and salary raise.

Possible presentation outline:


(1) Very brief history of the group and proposal
(2) How do they reach out to the community? What has the impact been?
(3) What went right - what can we learn?
(4) What didn't go quite as planned - what can we learn?
(5) Updates for the past year and plans for the next year
(6) Collaborate and share ideas
(7) "Score" - the steward can come up with a score to see how effective it has been. Some criteria for scoring:
     (a) Effectiveness of the program
     (b) Quality of people
     (c) Quality of infrastructure
     (d) Budget utilization and accounting (overspent/underutilized)
     (e) Value addition and learning
