Minutes of Asha Seattle meeting on 09/21/2005.

 

Venue: Redmond Library

 

Attendees: Vibhavaree, Ken, Deb, Pavan, Rohit, Tapoja, Kavitha, Ravi, Swati, Vani, Vaibhav, Aparna, Jaya, Soujanya, Neeru, Chida, Raghav, Srijan

 

Discussions:

1.      Discussion on how to spend the extra money and some project related statistics – Swati

a.      Around 300 K surplus after taking into account funding till Dec 06

b.      Ideas presented are –

                    i.            20% of funds for projects that are a little different and might not be taken up by other chapters

                   ii.            Remaining 80 % to be distributed between projects from other chapters, projects from other chapters with project stewards, additional needs for existing Asha Seattle projects and any unexpected needs (e.g. Tsunami) that arises.

c.      Some of the other points in discussion were around the need for more Project stewards and possibility of implementing 2 levels stewardship for a project – one beginner and one person with more experience.

 

2.      Asha logo and Tag line - Swati (more details found in mail from Swati on 09/22)

a.      Final vote on Logo – Choice A

b.      Final vote on Tag Line – Choice B   

c.      The distribution of votes is:

                    i.            Logo: A = 17, B = 3, C = 1, D = 10, E = 0. So 1st choice = A, 2nd choice = D, 3rd choice = B

                   ii.            Tagline:1 = 1, 2 = 17, 3 = 9, 4 = 3

So,1st choice = A global action group for socioeconomic change through education i.e. 2

2nd choice=Bringing hope through education i.e. 3

 

3.      Vikasana: Proposal for extra funding – Pavan

a.      The extra funds to go towards mid day meal ( fruits) for children and salary for  a teacher in the Vikasana project

b.      The current annual recurring funds are $3,500. Extra funding will be $1500  per annum

c.      Final Vote: Voted YES to allocate $1500 extra per annum on recurring basis.

 

4.      Samatha Pratisthan Mukbadhir School Proposal – Vaibhav

a.      The school is located in Maharashtra and was started by a couple belonging to the town and is dedicated for children with special needs like hearing impaired. Currently has around 45 children and is facing difficulties in obtaining funds.

b.      The school provides education (vocational and regular) up to 10th std. Many of the children obtain employment in the weaving industry for which the area is popular after completion of  school

c.      Project taken up for discussion, more details have to be obtained from the project before it can go for voting. Some of the points to be clarified are

d.      How is the funding distributed, how much is needed and how is it allocated for different activities.

                    i.            What are the activities that are taken up in the school

                   ii.            How many teachers are there for these 45 children

                 iii.            Any special methods adopted for teaching

                iv.            Are any special tool kits available for the children at school

 

5.      Proposal for hosting Indian Ocean concert in Seattle in November – Vaibhav

a.      Asha Silicon valley is organizing concert tour by Indian Ocean in Nov; the idea of holding one in Seattle was discussed.

b.      It was decided that November is too early a date for us to get involved with hosting a concert  since lot of infrastructure and volunteer hours are needed and the overhead is high.

 

6.      Allgorythms concert: update on planning – Vaibhav

a.      The concert brochure was passed around for comments

b.      Volunteers signed up for selling tickets

 

7.      JE project for providing vaccine to children in India – Jaya

a.      JE project is spearheaded by PATH to provide vaccine for Japanese encephalitis disease which claimed around 1000 children recently in UP.

b.      The vaccine is expensive but is available in Seattle.

c.      Proposal to fund buying of the vaccine and help with organize its distribution in India

d.      Final Vote: Voted YES to fund and help with distribution

e.      Jaya to talk with individual members to facilitate it.

 

8.      Sumi Chandresh fellowship – Rahgav

a.      Proposal for funding Sumi's personal expenses amounting up to Rs/-3000 per month

b.      Final Vote on funding the personal expenses – Voted YES

c.      Proposal for sponsoring the video cam – Final Vote – Voted YES

 

9.      Mt Everest Gautam climb fundraising – Deb

a.      Proposal to withdraw the funding for this project and drop it from Asha Seattle project list

b.      Final Vote – Voted YES to withdraw

 

10.  Deaf Aid Society – Ravi

a.      The project has a total budget of around 18 lakhs

b.      9 lakhs out of it are to be sponsored by Govt of India

c.      Proposal to allocated the rest from Asha Seattle

d.      Decided to gather further information

e.      Aparna took this up

 

11.  Muskaan - Ravi (more details found in the mail from Ravi on 09/22)

  1. The entire proposal could not be presented due to lack of time
  2. Waiting for the vote till the next meeting is not viable since it is one of the possible beneficiaries of miles for smiles’05.
  3. Telecon to be arranged by Ravi to discuss and vote on it ASAP.
